Hi friends,

FYI – last week’s voting results showed your favorite apocalypse as a group was . . . drumroll:

Plagues – Natural or Man-made

(Natural disasters were a close second.)

I’ll make sure to sprinkle some of both liberally in the back story and history segments I’m writing this week. (I’ll be using them as short chapter headings)

I also decided to do a school primer written by the evil government in charge, who has, of course, sanitized history in their favor. Here’s a sample. What do you think?

A is for Apocalypse. Evil leaders caused the apocalypse. The city families will keep us safe so it never happens again.

I is for Isolation. Isolation of the sick protects everyone in the family and community.

O is for Obey. Children who obey their parents and leaders live happy lives.

P is for Plague. The plagues wiped the sinners from the earth and spared our ancestors to build the city.

Hello, creepy, brainwashing government. 🙂

Your challenge of the week:

Write your own line for the primer and send it to me. I’d love to read them and if it fits the story well, I’ll put it in the book and mention you in the back matter.

Self-Defense Tip – Let go of my wrist, Buddy!

Since one of my life-long passions is teaching self-defense to any- and everyone, I figured I’d teach you all a quick, little technique that can get your hand free from a wrist grab. This works for an overly pushy salesman or something more sinister.

Don’t worry. You already know how to do it.

  1. Hold your right hand out as if to shake someone’s hand. (get a friend to actually grab your wrist if you can)
  2. Keep your right elbow tight against your body – this is key. Don’t try to lift your entire arm in the next move, just your hand and forearm.
  3. Fix your hair.

What?

Yes, it’s as simple as the natural movement you make to bring your hand up and run it through your hair. Of course, you’ll want to do it with a little more force than normal, but self-defense moves work best when you follow the natural movements of your body.

Also, go back to someone grabbing your wrist. See how their thumb is on top of your wrist and the four fingers below? If you pull straight back, all the fingers come into play and it’s almost impossible to pull your hand free from someone stronger than you. Instead, pull your hand straight up toward the side of your head (bend at the elbow and keep your elbow tight against your side), and you’re just going against the thumb, all by itself. Easy, peasy.

What do you think? Did my instructions make sense? Did you get it to work? If enough of you are interested, let me know and I’ll record a short, little video and include it in a future email.

Stay safe!

Thanks to the fans who have been buying Combat Origin as a pre-order on Amazon. It’s so fun to see a copy sell every couple of days. It’s a big deal for a new author like me. You’re the best! (BTW – We’re up to 22 sales so far – woohoo!)

Until next week,

Misty 🙂
